Nature vs Nurture

We have recently published a new title for The Brilliant Series called Brilliant Manager. This got me thinking… when it comes being a great leader or manager, how much is nature and how much is nurture?

When I listen to the leader interviews on Red Business they are so inspiring. With some leaders you get a sense that it’s an innate ability. But a surprising number of great leaders, by their own admission, had to study really hard to become the inspirational force they are today. Studying by reading autobiographies or going to conferences and hearing great leaders speak.

I guess you could say I’m doing my homework everyday! I’m fortunate enough to edit some of the leader interviews for Red Business . Which can be a very difficult job sometimes, as all the leaders we interview have such great stories, you don’t want to take anything out as it’s all valuable advice!

Well anyway back to the question… I think if you want to be a great leader, and you put in the necessary effort and do the necessary homework, I believe you will achieve your goals. So I guess I’m on the nurture side of the argument, what do you think? Answers on a postcard please…
